Land Acknowledgement:
We at the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust acknowledge that our mission of protecting and maintaining the natural and agricultural resources in and around the region currently called the Sutter Buttes was carried out by members of local indigenous tribes for thousands of years. We acknowledge that this indigenous stewardship was disrupted, leading to a loss of cultural heritage and a loss of native plants and animals. We acknowledge that people with ancestral connections to the land are still here among us today, and that a myriad of people consider these lands sacred.

Public Service Announcement for Immediate Release: August 8, 2024 A Clarification Regarding the Proposal to Rename the Sutter Buttes

The Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust (SBRLT) would like to clarify that the proposal to rename the Sutter Buttes the “The Sacred Buttes” was not initiated or endorsed by the SBRLT Board of Directors.

The name change proposal, dated March 21, 2024, was submitted to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names and it did not list an associated agency or organization in the petition. SBRLT staff and directors became aware of the petition after reading an article published in the Appeal Democrat July 19, 2024.

The SBRLT takes a neutral position on the name change proposal and continues to focus on carrying out our mission to, “protect and maintain the natural and agricultural resources of the Sutter Buttes and the surrounding region for present and future generations.” The SBRLT supports respectful public dialogue. Residents and other stakeholders are encouraged to share their perspectives with the Sutter County Board of Supervisors and with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names:

Each year you can see the wonderful work we accomplish through the land trust. Together, we've committed resources to protect over 2,000 acres of conservation lands. There are many great projects underway now and with your membership this year, you'll help protect the land within the Sutter Buttes and beyond, help maintain the Pacific Flyway for migrating waterfowl, as well as, preserving important agricultural lands that support our local farming and economy.
